Airline safety is almost three times better than a decade ago, according to FlightGlobal’s Airline Safety and Losses Annual Review 2016.
On average, from the point of view of passengers, the airline industry as a whole is now more than three times safer than it was ten years ago and nine times safer than 20 years ago.
The passenger fatality rate for the last five years is almost one per 16 million passengers carried. The rate for the last decade (2000-2009) was one per 3.7 million and for the 1990s, one per 1.8 million.
Insurers, on the other hand, have had a tough year with incurred all-risk losses exceeding written premium for the fourth year running. However, some in the market have seen small signs of the market starting to harden as the year drew to a close.
